It's unsatisfying to read issue to issue or even trade to trade. The comic feels more interested in adding more lore and side characters than actually having most of it's characters develop and do interesting things. I also found out that this character was almost killed off in the first arc and was only kept around because of Sana. The character that escapes this trap is Kippa, as she goes though more well paced character development for a comic book as she becomes braver and bolder through the tasks she has faced so far. Maika as a character does not feel like she does through any internal or external changes for the first 24 issues of the story, and as a result it's kind of hard to get invested in the conflicts she gets into as it feels like she has a one-track mind. Many characters are introduced in the story, spout some exposition or setup for future events, and then disappear for 12 issues only to reappear and do some additional minor thing. Marjorie Liu got her start writing romance and fantasy novels, and honestly when reading Monstress it does not feel like she changed her writing style to fit the medium.
